How to Choose Wrinkle Treatment

While there is no single product available that can completely eliminate wrinkles, there are some ingredients that can significantly reduce the appearance of wrinkles and help skin look younger and suppler. The extent of the results also depends on how invasive the technique is. Products applied directly on the skin don’t have the same efficacy as injections or peels. Does this Spark an idea?

Examine the depth and location of your wrinkles. If your wrinkles are just few and far between or if they consist mainly of superficial lines, you may do well with a cream or moisturizer containing certain anti-wrinkle ingredients. If, however, your lines are deep or located on a highly visible place (such as your forehead), you may need more aggressive treatment to get rid of them.

Look for Vitamin A as one of the main ingredients in wrinkle creams. Vitamin A is a powerful antioxidant that neutralizes free radicals and causes the skin to look more radiant.

Talk to your doctor about Retinol. Retinol and Retin-A are more powerful versions of Vitamin A, often commercialized in the form of gels, rather than creams, than can be applied directly over the wrinkles. Retinol has FDA approval as an anti-wrinkle treatment and is usually only available from your doctor (dermatologist or plastic surgeon).

Consider Botox for deep wrinkles in the forehead or frown. If Botox seems too extreme, ask about Juvaderm, an injectable gel that actually fills up the wrinkles but doesn’t paralyze the muscles. Both are somewhat expensive in comparison to creams, but the results last 6 to 12 months without any need for touch-ups in between.

Check labels for other ingredients that also help aging skin, including copper peptides or hydroxy acids (to speed up collagen production) and coenzyme Q-10 or tea extracts to help skin regain elasticity and prevent inflammation caused by the sun and other environmental agents.

Tips & Warnings

  • Creams and gels are supposed to reduce the visibility of wrinkles, not make them disappear.
