Cattle dogs are different from most other dogs in that they are born into their jobs. They are born with instincts to herd cattle and livestock and will often do so on their own. Train your cattle dog to herd cattle.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

    Teach Your Dog

  1. Step 1

Teach your dog to listen to you before taking him around other animals. He should know to come to you and obey simple commands such as "come", "sit" and "down".

  2. Step 2

Introduce your cattle dog to cattle in a pen first. This ensures the dog won't chase the herd away and also allows you to easily catch the dog.

  3. Step 3

Sit back and watch your dog and notice what kind of directions he may need to work on. Most cattle dogs are born with a herding instinct and will naturally herd the livestock to you.

  4. Step 4

Take your dog to herd some cattle. Have a direction in mind and work on showing your dog how to get there. He should herd the cattle in the direction that you are going.

  5. Step 5

Praise your cattle dog for doing a good job. Positive reinforcement goes a long way.
