How to Drive a 5 Speed Transmission

Driving a 5-speed transmission is a basic skill that every driver should learn. Learn how to drive a 5-speed transmission and never worry about driving a car again.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Start the car by pressing the clutch to the floor with your left foot and then turning the key. Make sure the shifter is in the neutral position before letting off the clutch. If the shifter is in gear and you let off the clutch without pressing the gas, the car will die.

  2. Step 2

Press the clutch to the floor, put the shifter into first gear and slowly release the clutch while gently pressing on the gas with your right foot.

  3. Step 3

Listen to the engine sound to know when to shift gears. You can also look at the engine RPM gauge. Take your foot off the gas, press the clutch to the floor, shift to second gear and press on the gas as you release the clutch. Repeat this with every upshift needed.

  4. Step 4

To downshift, start by slowing down. Let off the gas, press the clutch to the floor, shift down one gear and slowly let off the clutch while pressing the gas slightly.

  5. Step 5

Stop the car by pressing the clutch to the floor and then pressing the brake. Pressing the brake alone will cause the car to die.

on 2/15/2010 one thing every new 5 speed driver needs to learn first is to find the "grind point" of the car. This is the moment you can feel the car is about to stall. Thats how you know when to step lightly on the gas to avoid stalling.
