Peak oil fears are fueling green survivalists. If you haven't already started planing on your survival strategy, here are a few tips on getting you started.

Difficulty: Challenging
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Transportation. What will your mode of transportation be? You should own a bike and think about what accessories you will need to add to make it safe and user friendly for every day use. Some ideas are, a large basket, headlights and rear lights, rear view mirror. If you have small children, think about getting a bike trailer. Trailers also work great for carting groceries.

  2. Step 2

Food. How will you feed yourself and your family? Its a good idea to start building a pantry at the very least. If you are able to do some farming on your property, that's great, start planting. A green house would be ideal but if you live in an apartment, you may want to think about your indoor growing options. There are many indoor greenhouses available on the internet in all price ranges.

  3. Step 3

Heat. How will you heat your home? Do you own a fireplace or a wood burning stove? If you do, start collecting wood. If you don't, consider putting one of the two in. Not only will they increase the value of your home but they will also save you a lot of money on heating expenses should a crisis arise.

  4. Step 4

Cooking. How will you cook your food? A wood burning stove is an excellent option for indoor cooking, a fire pit will also work well outdoors. You will need to stock up on wood for both of these options.

  5. Step 5

Heating and Cooling tips around the home. Replace old windows and seal any gaps around windows and doors. Use large heavy drapes to keep out drafts and the hot sun. If you have a multilevel home, sleep in the basement in the summer and the attic in the cold winters. Remember, heat rises. All of these tips will reduce your dependence on outside energy sources. Start thinking about making both the basement and the attic more liveable now before you need them.
