Having friendly neighbors is one of the most enjoyable aspects of owning a home or condo. No one wants to live between difficult neighbors, as you have no way out of the situation besides moving. For anyone who owns a home, rents an apartment, or who otherwise has neighbors, learning to get along with these individuals is a must. Follow these key pointers to maintaining a friendly, civil relationship with your next-door neighbor.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderate

Things You’ll Need:

  • A neighbor or neighbors
  • Home, condo, or apartment
  • Tact
  • Compromise
  • Conversational skills

Step1
If you are the new kid on a block, realize that your neighbor may have some reservations about you moving in. They may have had a bad experience with previous homeowners, tarnishing their outlook on neighbors in general. Be cordial, smile, and introduce yourself the first chance you get.
Step2
Ask for advice. If you're new to the area, ask your neighbor for directions to the closest gas station, where the best pizza can be found, and how far the local mall is. Not only will they feel important, they'll like that you're confiding in them.
Step3
Put yourself in their shoes. If you have a loud dog that barks night and day, consider how you'd feel if your neighbor had one too. If you blast your stereo at all hours, remember that other people are affected by your actions.
Step4
Respect your neighbor's home and property. Yes, you may love growing all kinds of trees and bushes, but keep them within your own property. You may think that everyone loves red azalias, but your neighbor may be allergic to flowers. Keep this in mind when planting and pruning your lawn.
Step5
If you have a dog, always pick up after it when you take it for a walk. Nothing kills a relationship between neighbors faster than stepping in animal feces.
Step6
Get to know your neighbors. No, you don't have to become best friends with John and Mary across the street. But, inviting some neighbors in close proximity to your home over for a barbeque will put you on the fast track to friendship.

Tips & Warnings

  • Always treat your neighbors as respectfully as possible.
  • Never damage or steal your neighbor's property.
