Step1
Right after the disaster you will feel confused, frightened and unsure what to do first.
The first thing you are going to do is stop, sit down and access your own injuries. If you are bleeding then find something to stop the bleeding. If you have broken bones you will need to make sure they are not causing bleeding or more damage if you move.
Step2
Next is to look around you. What are the new dangers? If power lines are down you will want to avoid touching them or getting near them. If there is water on the ground near down power lines then move away from it to prevent electric shock.
Step3
If you have others or family around you access their medical conditions. If you can move or move them then do so to a safe, close by area. Stay in the open where rescue personnel can easily find you as long as it's safe. Stay away from area that could become flooded by moving to higher ground. If you have been in an earthquake leave buildings. Look around you to make sure you are in an area where nothing will fall on top of you.
Step4
If you can move freely this is the time to help rescue other people who are injured or trapped. Move the less injured to the safe area and place them so they can help the more severely injured in the area. Do not try to rescue everyone at once. You can not do it. Just provide help one person at a time.
Step5
Once you have done what you can look for survival items needed. Blankets, clothing, shoes, water and food. Most people in an earthquake prone area will keep emergency supplies in the trunk of their cars. Prepare for the next few hours providing your own care.
Step6
Medical and emergency services will have all they can handle including their own loss. Do not expect help right away and prepare yourself emotionally for further loss. Keep everyone talking and making plans for the next few hours of survival.
Step7
Help will arrive. It may not be very quick and sometimes could take days so be patient and try to think positive. Keep kids and adults entertained with stories, music or by reading any books or magazines you can find. Do not let depression and hopelessness take over your thinking.
Step8
Always consider of further disaster in the next few days or hours. Prepare yourself and surrounding for safety. Keep your supplies and medical near. Provide help to who ever you can.
Step9
Prepare yourself for looters. In many areas you will have to defend you property the best you can. Remember the most important thing you have to defend is your life and your family. Everything else can be replaced or lived without.
Step10
If rescue requires you to move to a safe location provided then take advantage of it. Make it a temporary stay and try to figure out how to survive and make a life away from where you are now. Get the information offered by rescue personnel about housing, hotels, financial help and move on quickly. Do not wait for the government or city to rebuild your home and buy your food. Help yourself as fast as possible!
Step11
Do not think about the material items lost. They are gone. Start to make a mental list of what to provide next. You will need clothes. You will need food and you will need a place to live. That's all for now. You can provide the pleasure items as time goes on. Be thankful for what you can do one step at a time.
Step12
Make contact with family outside the area so they know you are safe and can offer help. Do not make large investment with money provided, make emergency investments for now.
Step13
Once you are set and everyone is in one home you can start to rebuild your life. Consider change of jobs and location. Consider a different lifestyle. This is your chance to re invent yourself and your lifestyle so take advantage of a very bad situation and make it work for you.
