How to Recover from a Lay Off

Recuperating from a lay off is a daunting task that lingers and overwhelms even the most balanced and logical personality types. It knocks a person off kilter and sends them spinning into what may seem like a downward and never-ending spiral. But if you or an associate are suffering this bought, have faith that you can start on the road to recover and here's how:

Difficulty: Moderate

Step1
First and foremost an understanding must be reached and accepted that a lay off is a temporary status. You will find work, may that be with the same company or another and you will continue to thrive and prosper. Do not let yourself delve into depression for that is a long road to recovery.
Step2
Fend off self-pity and consider this an opportunity to seek employment that is more gratifying, more financially lucrative, offers better advancement opportunities or allows for more benefits, etc.
Step3
Reconnect with distant or lost associates and build or expand your network for career opportunities.
Step4
Rebuild self esteem by accepting that lay offs are not necessarily due to personal fault. Many ingredients are involved mainly input that has nothing to do with you. Forgive yourself if you harbor guilt or anger and more forward in with a positive perspective.
Step5
Spend your days keeping abreast of available career openings but continue normal activities with family and friends who may prove to be your most support system.

on 5/27/2008 Great tips. I've definitely been without a job before, and it's hard to stay motivated and feel worthwhile. I would just add that you should be very kind to yourself during this process, and don't expect too much of yourself! Thanks for sharing.
