How to Find High Paying Freelance Writing Jobs

How to Find High Paying Freelance Writing Jobs thumbnail
Every writer started somewhere. Try your hand at freelance writing.

The challenge of freelance writing is often less the writing and more the difficulty in finding well-paying jobs, especially with recent changes in the publishing industry and the glut of writing sites on the Internet. Many don't pay much for articles. Those great jobs are still out there, though, and with a little searching and persistence you can find them. They may be jobs in actual offices that you can find at online search sites.

Find the online sites that list the types of jobs you are looking for. This is much easier said than done. There are a lot of useless sites to wade through. You can search terms like "freelance jobs" and "freelance writing," or you can start your search using resources that others have gathered.

Look into sites like PoeWar.com, Freelance Writing Jobs at FreelanceWritingGigs.com or JournalismJobs.com. These list freelance writing and editing jobs that are online, such as blog writing, or at an actual workplace. Check out all the promising links from your search and bookmark the sites that fall most in line with what you're looking for.

Network. "It's not what you know, it's who you know," is just as relevant in online freelance writing as it is offline, as well as in many other careers. Some of the best freelance jobs aren't advertised; they're filled by word of mouth. Join forums, chat with other writers, send messages to successful online writers and ask them for tips.

Visit book publisher and magazine websites. Look for a link that says something along the lines of "submission guidelines." Print magazines and books typically pay higher than online companies. These jobs are harder to get, but they're worth the effort. Spend some time querying print magazines. Have some writing clips available to show to these publishers.

Sign up for free newsletters. Some freelance writing websites offer free newsletters. Create an email account just for the newsletters and sign up for the ones that include job listings. You can always unsubscribe from the ones that you don't find helpful.

Consider paying for legitimate information. Be careful and use common sense. There are a lot of scams out there, especially online. In general, you shouldn't pay for job leads, but there are some legitimate resources out there that you can access for a price. One well-known, trustworthy source is the Writer's Market, published by Writer's Digest Books. You can buy the book or get an online membership to stay current.

Don't give up. You might respond to several job leads for every one that you actually get at first. Don't get discouraged and don't give up. Rejection is a normal and an expected part of writing. Read magazines about the writing life, and you will learn that this has happened to many of the top writers.

Tips & Warnings

  • Begin to build a writing portfolio with online writing. If the writing is professional, you can present samples when you apply for newspaper, magazine or other online writing jobs.

Great article! I took a writing course for children and was sent an inspirational note to refer to whenever I feel like writing is a hopeless profession. One of the facts in it stated that Ted Geisel (Dr. Seuss) was rejected by more than 35 publishers before his first book was published.
