Begin teaching your child to ride a bike by using training wheels. Encourage your child to ride a bike and show them how much fun it can be by riding your bike in front of them.

Stay behind your child as he/she begins to ride their bicycle and learn to balance their bike. Always let your child know that you are right there with them. Ride your bike alongside your child as he/she rides their bike. Take short trips until your child is comfortable riding their bicycle.

  3. Step 3

Remove the training wheels after your child has become familiar with their bicycle and are beginning to learn to balance their bicycle. Be sure that they are wearing a helmet and protective pads in case of injury if they fall.

  4. Step 4
    Encourage your child.
    Encourage your child.

Hold onto the back of your child's seat as they begin to slowly peddle their bike. Tell your child you are right behind them and that you won't move until they tell you to move. Start out slowly, and gradually speed up at a pace that is comfortable for your child. Encourage your child and let them know that they can do them. Tell them what a great job that they are doing.

  5. Step 5

Practice bicycle riding with your child in a driveway, a park or a sidewalk that doesn't have a lot of traffic. Always stay at the side of your child unless they have told you to move aside when they are feeling more confident. Be sure to let your child know that you can start and stop at any time. Do not practice too much, or it may discourage the child from riding. Take small steps each day until your child has built up their courage and confidence.

  6. Step 6

Practice riding every day with your child as he/she begins to learn without training wheels. Move to a larger area once they have become comfortable with a driveway or sidewalk. Try riding on a country road or a rural road in town that doesn't have a lot of traffic. Always stay to the side of the road and never in the middle of the road.

  7. Step 7

Take short bike trips with your child so that their confidence in riding their bicycle grows. The main key for them to learn riding a bike is balance. Once they have their balance, riding a bike will be simple.

Tips & Warnings
  • Always have your child wear a helmet and protective pads when riding a bike. This will prevent them from getting serious injuries if they fall.
