Step 1
Read aloud to your child, even as a baby. Try and read to your child for at least ten minutes every single day. This ritual will be one that you both come to love, and besides instilling a love of reading, you will create memories to last a lifetime.
-
Step 2
Keep lots of books in your home. Pick up books appropriate to your child's age at thrift stores, library sales, or swap with friends. Keep books in plain sight and within your child's reach. Make it a given that for every gift-giving event (birthday, holiday, etc.) your child always receives at least one new book.
-
Step 3
Unlock the magical world of free books for your child by visiting the library on a regular basis. Let them pick out several books from the children's section, and walk around to show them all the other types of books available. You might be surprised by your young one requesting a book on machines or flowers.
-
Step 4
Allow your school-aged child to acquire his or her very own library card. Owning such a "grownup" item will encourage your child to make use of it.
-
Step 5
Make sure your child witnesses you reading on a regular basis. And don't think you have to have your nose in a classic literary work, either. Peruse magazines, newspapers, cookbooks, whatever it is you enjoy. When your child sees that you make reading a priority in your own busy life, he or she will follow suit.
