How to Make Your Own Hummingbird Nectar

How to Make Your Own Hummingbird Nectar thumbnail
Small, colorful hummingbirds will return for homemade nectar.

Hummingbirds are beautiful wonders of nature. These tiny birds, found only in North, Central and South America, are adapted to many climates, but the largest number are found near the Equator. When they find a backyard hummingbird feeder you have set out, they will return to it again and again. Although packaged nectar mix is widely available at garden and home centers, it is less expensive to make your own hummingbird nectar.

Instructions

    • 1

Pour 1 cup of water into a saucepan. Add 1/4 cup of granulated sugar. Bring mixture to a boil and stir so all the sugar dissolves.

    • 2

Remove from heat and allow the mixture to cool completely.

    • 3

Fill a cleaned hummingbird feeder with the cooled nectar.

    • 4

Store any remaining nectar in the refrigerator for up to three days.

Tips & Warnings

  • DO NOT add red food color to the nectar. It could harm the birds, and is not necessary to attract them to the feeder.
