Step 1
Sit in the wheelchair with your legs bent, feet on foot rests and arms by your sides. A hand should rest on each of the back wheels and the arms are bent at the elbow. Be sure you are comfortably sitting in the chair before moving on to the next step.
-
Step 2
Begin by balancing the wheelchair on its back wheels and maintaining that position. This means pushing forward on the wheels with your gloved hands as you step off the footrest with you left foot and use it as a pivot. Tip back with the chair until you find your center and gravity and balance the chair firmly on its back wheels.
-
Step 3
Hold the right hand firmly on the top of the right back wheel to keep it steady as you push forward with the left hand on the left back wheel of the chair. The chair should begin moving slowly in a circle if you continue to push forward. This may take a while to master.
-
Step 4
Realize that as you execute Step 2 that it is necessary to rock back and forth slightly on the wheelchair's back wheels to maintain your balance. This means pulling on the right and pushing with the left in short slow movements to maintain balance.
-
Step 5
Reverse hand and wheel dominance to go in the other direction.
-
Step 6
Practice this maneuver until you complete it smoothly, quickly and with flair.
