Step 1
Begin with the wheelchair firmly on the ground, feet in foot rests and arms resting on the wheel tops. Bend the arms at the elbow and sit comfortably. It is a good idea to wear thin or racing gloves when operating a wheelchair over a period of time.
-
Step 2
Push the right hand hard against the top of the back wheel of the wheelchair. To turn the wheelchair on all four wheels it is important to apply more pressure to one side of the chair than the other. Perform Steps 2 and 3 simultaneously.
-
Step 3
Hold the left back wheel still with the left hand to cause the motion of the right hand to slowly move the wheelchair in a circle. A certain amount of strength is necessary to hold the wheelchair steady on the left side. It may take a few times to get the hang of this maneuver.
-
Step 4
Reverse direction of the circular motion of the chair by alternating hands. This means using the left hand to push the left wheel forward while the right hand holds the right back wheel still.
-
Step 5
Consider locking one wheel in position using the wheelchair's brake to practice the spinning motion. This allows you to learn the trick using one hand. Repetitions make great exercise.
-
Step 6
Practice this maneuver often, keeping the feet off the ground in the foot rests. The better you get at spinning the faster you can go.
