Step 1
Begin by sitting in the wheelchair with your arms down and hands touching the tops of the back wheels and your feet firmly planted in the foot rests. Ensure you are in an even and comfortable position before moving on to the next step.
-
Step 2
Tip the wheelchair backwards, balance it on the back wheels and hold the position. This means pushing forward on the wheels with your gloved hands as you step off the footrest with you left foot and use it as a pivot. It is always a good idea to wear racing gloves when working with a wheelchair.
-
Step 3
Pretend that all four wheels are on the ground as you push forward on the back wheels with both hands. Ensure hands move simultaneously to increase overall balance and coordination. This is not an easy move and may take a lot of practice.
-
Step 4
Pull backwards on the back wheels to reverse the wheelchair. Controlling balance through coordinated movement is key. Keep hands in time as they push against the wheel edges.
-
Step 5
Realize that a constant center of gravity is necessary to oppose the forces of moving the wheelchair back and forth in a straight line. Steady the upper torso or chest area to counteract the movement of the wheelchair.
