Step 1
Look at the selection available and determine your need. Decide if you want equipment for professional use or just for fun. Some bows are longer and lighter than others. Some bows have gadgets for aiming. Choose the ones that suit your needs.
-
Step 2
Determine who is shooting. Look at the size, stature and expertise of the archer. Beginners need bows that are not too heavy and are easy to pull back. Experts want more precise bow and arrows that rely on technique more than ease of use.
-
Step 3
Choose a fiber glass bow if you are a beginner or a child. They come left or right handed and in sizes like 36, 44 and 51 inch bows.
-
Step 4
Use a recurve or a compound bow. A recurve bow is cheaper but you need more skill to use it. This bow is curved at both ends. A compound bow uses mechanical pulleys. You can aim well because it has a guide but it is more expensive.
-
Step 5
Decide if you draw your bow left or right handed. Measure your draw length and determine your draw weight. Use a lighter bow for target shooting because of the repetitiveness of the shooting. A hunter wants a heavier weight that will reach the target with power.
-
Step 6
Pick the right arrows. Choose your arrows depending on the type of archery you want to do. Use cheap wooden arrows if you are a beginner and expensive aluminum arrows if you want better quality for tournaments.
