The split jump is one of the lunge exercises. It's a plyometric exercises, which involves leaving the ground. You increase the intensity of the exercise by increasing the height of the jump. If you have concerns about your knees or are to avoid high impact exercises, get a physician's permission before attempting this particular exercise.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Do a series of stretching exercises to warm up. Wear comfortable clothing and sturdy cross-training shoes.

  2. Step 2

Check for overhead clearance to avoid bumping into the ceiling up the upward movement. Allow at least 24 inches of clearance above the head.

  3. Step 3

Begin in the lunge position. Extend the right leg behind the body with the heel off the floor. Bend the right leg to the front of the body with the knee aligned over the toes of the left foot.

  4. Step 4

Have about 36 inches between the front and back feet. Keep the feet pointed forward at all times.

  5. Step 5

Lower the body by bringing the knee of the (right) back leg nearly to the floor while bending the left knee. Propel the body upward and straighten the legs. Land so that the left leg is to the rear and the right leg is to the front.

  6. Step 6

Repeat the exercise by lowering the body then jumping up. Reverse the legs each time.

  7. Step 7

Perform this exercise slowly at first to perfect form. Watch carefully the placement of the front knee and the feet on each lunge.
