How to Make a Monkey Snout on a Sock Puppet

The original sock monkey pattern has been sold inside the Rockford Red Heel Socks since 1920. You can still make the sock monkey. At this point you should already have the cut and sewn sides of the socks for the body.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • 1 pair Rockford Red Heel socks
  • Scissors
  • All-purpose thread
  • Hand sewing needle
  • Cotton or poly-fiber batting
  • Black and white embroidery thread
  1. Step 1

Cut around the heel in an oval. Follow the shape of the red heel part and include about a 1/4 inch of the brown around the white. This will allow you enough sock to turn under and stitch without losing any of the snout size.

  2. Step 2

Lay out the sock and choose the placement of the monkey snout. The eyes will not be attached yet, so visualize where the eyes will be and set your snout an inch or so below that point. Remember the higher the snout, the longer the body. Decide how long you want the body and how high you want the snout.

  3. Step 3

Turn the brown edges under and carefully pin them to the top layer of sock once you've decided where the monkey's mouth will be. Be sure not to catch the bottom layer since you will later be stuffing the head and you need it open.

  4. Step 4

Stitch your snout edges. Use a long section of all-purpose thread, tie a not in one end and thread the needle. Poke the threaded needle through the area turned under and the first layer of sock. Bring your needle through from underneath and do it again right next to where you started.

  5. Step 5

Continue running this whipping stitch around the mouth, but do not finish the entire mouth, as you will need an opening to stuff.

  6. Step 6

Remove the pins at this point. Take your batting and stuff it through your opening of the monkey snout. Fill it until you can fit no more stuffing into the monkey mouth.

  7. Step 7

Turn the opening edge under and whip stitch until the now stuffed snout is completely attached. You can use your embroidery thread in either black or white(your choice) to do a running stitch across the middle of the lips. This is optional, but it can help to define the lips.
