American Girl Dolls are fun to play with because many accessories and play scenarios exist for them. Girls who play with American Girl Dolls enjoy dressing them in special outfits and treating them like best friends. A slumber party or camping trip is an activity that a girl might share with a best friend, so making a sleeping bag for an American Girl Doll is a good idea.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • 2 Types of fabric--about a yard of each
  • Matching thread
  • Scissors
  • Sewing machine or hand-sewing needles
  • An American Girl or other 18" doll
  1. Step 1

Measure the doll to establish the size of the bag, and then choose fabric and thread. Select a fabric for the exterior of the bag and a second fabric for the lining.

  2. Step 2

Gather materials to sew the sleeping bag: fabric, thread, scissors and sewing machine.

  3. Step 3

    Cut two same-size pieces--about 18 inches long by 10 to11 inches wide--of each fabric.

  4. Step 4

Sew the two rectangular pieces together, with the right sides facing each other. Turn the unfinished edges over, right side out, and stitch a narrow hem on each edge.

  5. Step 5

Turn the bag right side out.

  6. Step 6

    Dress the doll in pajamas.

  7. Step 7

Slip doll into the sleeping bag, feet first. It should come at least up to her chin.

Tips & Warnings
  • Doll play with an American Girl Doll and a sleeping bag can involve pretend slumber parties, with the doll dressed in pajamas, robe and slippers, or it can imitate a more outdoorsy experience, like a camping trip. In this case, the doll might be dressed in hiking-type clothing and sleep inside a small tent.
  • Little girls with American Girl Dolls often like to dress like their dolls and have similar accessories. Doll play with a sleeping bag can be enhanced if the doll and her owner can share matching bags or pajamas. These items can be home-sewn or purchased.
  • Don't forget to measure the doll carefully before cutting fabric, and make certain that all four pieces of cut fabric are the same size so that the finished bag is symmetrical and will lie flat.
