Bikini waistbands are folded pieces of material that run around the waist of a bikini bottom. If properly placed, these bands can hide a small belly. Bikini waistbands also add an accent and design to a pair of bikini bottoms. Adding a waistband to your bikini is a fun way to change up an old swimsuit or decorate a new one.

Things You'll Need:

  1. Step 1

Measure your waist at the spot where the top of the bikini will sit. Add 1 inch to the total measurement if you want the band to go all the way around the waist. If you want the band to tie on one or both sides, add 6 or 8 inches to the length.

  2. Step 2

Cut the material the length of the measurement from Step 1. Cut the width 1 1/2 times the size you want it. For example, if you want a 2-inch band, cut the fabric 3 1/2 inches wide. Material used for the waistband can be the same as the bikini or a complementary color or pattern. For example, if you have a black bikini with green polka dots, a green waistband would match.

  3. Step 3

Fold the waistband the width you desire. It needs to be the same amount around the entire piece. If you have a simple band that does not tie. Fold the end over 1/4 inch and sew the end to the side hem of the bikini bottoms. If you want to tie the band on one side, attach the band in the same place and leave 3 inches for the tie. If you want a tie on both sides, cut the waistband in half and sew the ties on 2 inches from each end of the waistband.

  4. Step 4

Sew the waistband around the top edge of the bikini bottom. Once you reach the bikini bottom's other hem, stop and sew a seam from the top of the waistband to the bottom. If you want a tie on both sides, attach the second section to the other side of the hem like you did the first side.

  5. Step 5

Continue to sew the rest of the top of the waistband. Once you attach the top, sew around the bottom of the waistband in the same manner. Hem the ends of the ties with a 1/4 inch hem.
