Before you begin cutting your client's curly hair, section the hair off to keep your palette clean, help you see what you are doing and allow the client to wait comfortably without strands of hair hanging in her face.

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Comb
  • Hair clips (small, medium and large)
  1. Step 1

Comb the wet hair thoroughly. Get all the tangles and rough spots smoothed out.

  2. Step 2

Run the comb through the hair from the hairline straight back to the ends. No part is necessary at this point.

  3. Step 3

Place the tip of the comb at the middle of the crown and run it horizontally, along the crown, toward the left ear. You have just created the left front section. Let it hang to the side for now. Repeat the process on the right side. Find the natural or preferred part and adjust the sections to accommodate the part. Clip both sections with a hair clip.

  4. Step 4

Hold one big clip horizontally, and run it along the base of the neck, just above the hairline. You want to leave about a quarter of an inch section of hair out of the clip. Pin the remaining hair up.

  5. Step 5

Comb out the quarter-of-an-inch section in preparation for the cut.

  6. Step 6

Work from the back to the front and the bottom to the top.

  7. Step 7

Group already-cut sections as you go to keep them from slipping into uncut territory. Curly hair tends to bounce or unravel out of place, so this step is extra useful with curly haircuts.

Tips & Warnings
  • You don't have to be perfect with the sections with curly hair, but try to keep them as even as possible to avoid having to go back and fix uneven sections.
