Things You'll Need:
- Jack
- Wrench
- Peen hammer
- Hammer
- Vice
-
Step 1
Loosen the lug nuts slightly on both front wheels with a lug nut wrench, and jack up the vehicle's front end on a flat surface. Remove the lug nuts and the wheels.
-
Step 2
Remove the caliper and disc on one side, so you can access the ball joint. Loosen the sway bar's mount.
-
Step 3
Press down the control arm to remove the stud on the ball joint. If the stud is stuck, take a ballpeen hammer and hit it a few times to make it come apart. Next, hit the control arm with a bigger hammer; the stud should come off.
-
Step 4
Unbolt the ball joint and replace it with the new one.
-
Step 5
Use a vice to remove the ball joints on older models. You'll find them tightly positioned in the lower control arm. Tighten down the vice to drive out the ball joint. Replace the ball joint with a new one. The splines on the joint help keep it in place in the control arm.
