The ball joint in your car is an integral piece of the front end that can affect the steering, alignment and wheels. It is important to replace the ball joint when needed. This job can be done at home in a few hours. Installing a new snap ring is a key part of this process.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Remove the new ball joint from the packaging and inspect it for damage or other problems. Exchange it immediately if you find any problems. Be sure to inspect the snap ring for damage.

  2. Step 2

Place the snap ring around the stud coming out of the end of the ball joint. The snap ring is a high-tension item, so it is wise to wear safety glasses while installing it. Actually, everyone in the vicinity of the snap ring you are installing should wear safety glasses.

  3. Step 3

Use a pair of needle-nose pliers, though many products are available specifically for different sizes of snap ring, and place the tips into each of the holes. Open the pliers, stretching the snap ring, and place it down into the groove.

  4. Step 4

Let go of the holes and allow the snap ring to snap into place. Continue to use caution when doing this. If the ring is not seating properly, it could snap off the stud and hit you or someone else, or get lost in your shop or garage.
