How to Install a CV Nut on a Car

Replacing a worn ball joint saves you time, money and the hassle of taking the car to a professional mechanic. You can do it in a day with the right tools and a little patience. Part of the task is installing a CV nut.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Reinstall the control arm with the new ball joint pressed into place. The control arm is held in by control arm bolts, which you would have indexed before the disassembly process. Tighten these bolts to line up the index marks you made before.

  2. Step 2

Slide the ball joint bolt through the hole in the back of the spindle. Watch for it to poke through to the front. If it is difficult to line up and get through the hole, tap it with a hammer or other device to coax it through.

  3. Step 3

Start the mounting nut and tighten it down with a 17 mm wrench. Get it as tight as you possibly can. Next, push the constant velocity (CV) joint through and place the CV nut on the end. Run it all the way down hand tight. Then, tighten it with a ratchet and the appropriate-sized socket.

  4. Step 4

Notice if the nut is a cotter pin or a pound-style nut; if so, you must complete the installation process by adding a cotter pin or taking a screwdriver and placing it in the groove of the nut. Pound the end of the screwdriver with a hammer or other device to help the nut sit down in the groove. This will keep the CV nut from coming loose while the car is in motion.
