Checking the main jet, a vital part of the carburetor, on your motorcycle is an important step in maintaining its engine. Keeping the main jet working efficiently and preventing damage or excess wear will extend the life of your motorcycle and your life in the fast lane.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Understand what the main jet on the motorcycle is. The main jet is located inside the carburetor. Check it any time you perform routine maintenance or a repair that involves the carburetor.

  2. Step 2

Remove the end piece of the carburetor by breaking loose and removing the four bolts that hold it in place. Take the bolts out completely and set them aside on a magnetic tray or in another safe place.

  3. Step 3

Look into the main jet to see if any blockage or buildup has developed. If not, you can put the end piece back on with the same bolts you removed from it. It is always a good idea to check the bolts to see if they are worn and should be replaced.

  4. Step 4

Blow out any debris or blockage with an air compressor, or carefully remove the blockage with a pair of pliers. Take care not to push it into the carburetor, or your job will get much harder and require additional repairs.

Tips & Warnings
  • Make sure to empty the fuel from the bowl after removing the carburetor. This will prevent a mess and slip hazard.
