Step 1
Diagnose the problem with the heating and cooling system. Assuming the thermostat must be replaced, purchase the new one and any other necessary supplies.

Disassemble the cooling system to gain access to the thermostat and install the new one. Check all of the parts you remove for damage or excessive corrosion; if there is damage to any part, replace it along with the thermostat. This will save you from having to redo this job in the future.

Step 3
Reinstall the tensioner by lining up the holes and installing the bolts and tightening them down. Then reinstall the serpentine belt according to the instructions outlined on the diagram placed under the hood of the vehicle. Tighten the tensioner nut, popping the belt onto the alternator.

Step 4
Slip one end of the radiator hose under the air conditioning line and onto the thermostat housing. Slip the other end onto the upper radiator port. It is important to maintain the position of the protectant, as it keeps the hose from rubbing a hole when moving against the other metal components of the engine. Place the hose clamp back around the ends of the hose and increase the tension to hold them in place.
