Knowing how to replace your vehicle's fuel pump can save you time, money and the hassle of taking the car to a professional mechanic, but you do need to have a little experience with fuel pumps, the right tools and an extra set of hands to help.

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Remove the gas tank, thus gaining access to the fuel pump. Remove the fuel pump. Discard the broken fuel pump according to the guidelines of your city department or garbage service.

  2. Step 2

Purchase a new fuel pump. This can be done by matching the manufacturer and model number from the old fuel pump or having an auto parts store associate look up the correct fuel pump based on the make, model and year of your vehicle.

  3. Step 3

Inspect the new fuel pump and return it if it is damaged. If not, proceed with installation. Place the new fuel pump into the tank in the same way and direction in which the old one came out.

  4. Step 4

Slide the lock ring into place. This is where you may need an extra set of hands, as it can be difficult to seat the new fuel pump while seating the lock ring. Once the clip slides into place, you can reinstall the fuel tank.

Tips & Warnings
  • It's a good idea to wear gloves when working with the fuel system. Any chemical exposure can have negative effects, especially on children.
