Protect a sculpture with small details and appendages from chipping or breaking. The best way to do this is to coat it with epoxy and then paint to finish it. The paint adds a protective coat to the artwork. Once the paint is dry, display the sculpture.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Sheet or newspaper
  • Epoxy spray
  • Paint
  • Paintbrushes
  • Lazy Susan
  1. Step 1

Lay a sheet or newspaper under the sculpture to cover the surface beneath it to catch paint splatter.

  2. Step 2

Coat the sculpture with a spray epoxy to help strengthen the intricate work. Make sure the epoxy is completely dry before painting the clay sculpture.

  3. Step 3

Select a method of paint application for the sculpture. Either spray paint or paint by hand with brushes.

  4. Step 4

Put the sculpture on a lazy Susan before painting to access areas without touching it. If you choose spray paint, hold the can about 6 inches away from the sculpture. Apply an even coat of paint to the piece.

  5. Step 5

Spray at an angle to get the paint inside any intricate details. Use paintbrushes to add small details or different colors.

Tips & Warnings
  • Don't get too close or overspray, or you will end up with paint running down the surface of your sculpture.
  • If you have very detailed work, avoid chipping by making sure you cover it in epoxy and then paint to protect it.
  • Use spray paint in a well ventilated area, and wear a mask to protect yourself from the toxic fumes.
