Learning how to grind a skateboarding ramp is like everything in street skating: a matter of practice and determination. In grinding it's all about the angle of the approach and learning how to get both sets of the board's trucks to grind along the top of the ramp. Grinding a skateboard ramp is a must-learn move for all advanced skaters. Remember to wear a helmet when practicing the grind technique below.

From Quick Guide: Xtreme Sports 101
Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Begin skating in the general direction of the ramp. Your feet are over the trucks and bearings of the board and you are approaching a moderate speed.

  2. Step 2

Angle your position so that you approach the ramp from the side rather in a straight line. This angling is the main difference between grinding the ramp and completing a board stall.

  3. Step 3

Skate up to the top of the ramp by accelerating (push one foot off the ground) at the base and then cruising to the top with both feet on the board. Your weight should be evenly distributed and the trucks and bearings of the underneath of the board should grind into the surface of the ramp.

  4. Step 4

Allow the skateboard to perch on the crest of the ramp with your feet balanced evenly over the trucks and bearings. Hold the position for a second or two before beginning your descent.

  5. Step 5

Shift your weight to one side of your body and lean into the front of the skateboard. This will turn the board downward but also allow you to gather speed for the descent.

  6. Step 6

Come back down the ramp with both feet firmly planted over the skateboard trucks and bearings as you roll away.

  7. Step 7

Practice this move as often as it takes for you to complete the steps smoothly.
