There is nothing cooler than learning some new skateboard tricks to show off to your friends. But before you pop an ollie, make sure that the kingpins and bushings on your skateboard are properly adjusted for a safe ride. Here are some tips on how to adjust skateboard bushings and kingpins.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderate

Things You’ll Need:

Step1
Rest the skateboard so that it is upside down on a table. Put a piece of cloth under the skateboard so it doesn't scratch the table.
Step2
Remove the screws that secure the trucks to the bottom of the skateboard as well as the screw (or sometimes wing nut) that holds the axle to the truck.
Step3
Tap the kingpin out gently with a hammer. You will need to hold the skateboard up off the table so that the kingpin has room to come out.
Step4
Inspect the kingpin to make sure it is not fractured in any way. Kingpins are solid pieces; there is no real way to adjust them. They either need to be replaced or not.
Step5
Look at the 2 bushings on the kingpins. Make sure the rubber is still intact and not dry, rotting or crumbling. Hard rubber bushings will allow you to turn more sharply while riding your skateboard.
Step6
Reinstall the kingpin by sliding it back in the proper slot. Top it with one of the bushings and tighten the wing nut or screw near the axle.
Step7
Tighten the remaining screws that bolt the truck into the skateboard and you are ready to ride.

Tips & Warnings

  • The kingpin is a bolt that runs from the bottom of the truck to the top of the axle.
  • The bushings are 2 rubber gaskets that sit around the kingpin and help secure the bolt.
  • If the kingpins and bushings need to be replaced but you don't feel confident changing them, bring your skateboard to a skateboard shop and watch while they fix it. Next time you'll be able to adjust them yourself.
  • Always wear a helmet and padding when riding a skateboard.
