Step 1
Play the low A on the chanter and adjust the treble drone that is furthest from the player. Use this note as the tuning note for the other notes in the bagpipes scale.
-
Step 2
Push the shaft of the treble drones up or down depending on the sharpness or flatness of the note. The pieces of the bagpipe's drones are designed to be adjusted. However, don't use too much force as the wood can be cracked, which leads to time consuming repairs.
-
Step 3
Adjust the length of the second treble drone. The pitch should match the low A of the chanter and the other treble drone.
-
Step 4
Tune the bass drone to the low A also. The bass drone plays a continuous A that is one octave lower than that played by the tenor drones.
-
Step 5
Make fine tuning adjustments by adjusting the "seat" of the reeds. The bagpipe has four reeds. There is one reed in the chanter and one reed in each of the three drones. They can be adjusted either lower or higher to get the bagpipe as much in tune as possible.
