How to Start Playing the Accordion

As with any musical instrument, you should start playing the accordion slowly while you learn the intricacies of the instrument and get comfortable with it. The accordion is an instrument that will require more focus and concentration because of the numerous parts you must use at the same time.

Instructions

    • 1

Learn to operate all three elements on the accordion that control the bellows and create sound. This includes each set of keys on each side and the air button that allows you to open the bellows without playing a note.

    • 2

Number your fingers one through five from your thumb to pinky. This will help you keep track of which fingers play which set of keys on each side.

    • 3

Choose very simple songs to start with, especially if you are learning to play by ear. Old-time folk songs like "She'll be coming Round the Mountain" often work best.

    • 4

Go very slowly when you start playing a song and find each note on the accordion. Determine the proper direction of the bellows at the same time. Take your time and learn to get everything right.

    • 5

Use a metronome while playing to pick up the pace and go faster once you are comfortable with the keys and bellows.

Tips & Warnings

  • Experience playing the piano can help, as the accordion's right side set of keys are very much like a piano keyboard. Keep in mind, though, that you are using only one hand to play those keys.
