Things You'll Need:
- Keyboard
-
Step 1
Listen to the music your group is playing and experiment with synth pads when a pad sound is appropriate. Often it will fit nicely during quieter moments or moments when one instrument is soloing. However, there are no hard rules about when to use this technique.
-
Step 2
Cycle through your keyboard's bank of pad sounds. Depending on the make and model of your instrument, you will have a varying number of options. Take time away from band practice to know what your sounds are so that when you need them you can confidently find the perfect fit.
-
Step 3
Adjust the volume and tone of your keyboard so the pad sounds blend into the background. A pad sound needs to be heavy on sustain and have an airy tone in order to fill out the sound without taking a lead role in the song's sound.
-
Step 4
Choose chords appropriately. One popular method of pad sound playing is to mimic the chord or chords being played by the lead instruments. Since your keyboard is operating at a lower volume, this will complement play instead of challenge it.
-
Step 5
Experiment with tones and sounds of pad sounds if you or your bandmates are not happy with the results. Keyboards offer a wide array of sonic choices, so don't limit yourself. You can use the keyboard's variety to your advantage and to help your bandmates out.
