A steel drum player can find himself in unlimited combinations and ensemble situations. Most involve other instruments or groups of other steel drummers. However, nothing makes a steel drummer happier than when he is playing solo. Without other instruments to compete with, the steel drummer can shine. Soloing is not as easy as it sounds, though. Here are a few steps to help your playing shine.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Steel drums
  • Sticks for steel drums
  1. Step 1

Practice your solo or improvise. There is no wrong way to play solo. Some people feel more comfortable knowing what they are playing. However, if you have a good feeling for melody and confidence in your playing, taking a cue from jazz and improvising your work is always exciting.

  2. Step 2

Memorize all the notes and tones the drum has to offer before attempting to solo in any capacity. Performing a melody is the primary function of the solo steel drummer.

  3. Step 3

Play your melody and follow it up with a series of chords. Imagine a guitar is playing your accompaniment. This helps visualize your solo.

  4. Step 4

Learn a popular melody everyone knows but isn't used to hearing on a steel drum. It is exciting for the audience to hear familiar music presented in a new way.

  5. Step 5

Improvise your solo. To do this, you need a mastery of the drums. However, this allows you freedom. Here you play what you want, how you want and progress in whatever way you like. The results can be quite exciting, but there are risks involved.

Tips & Warnings
  • Use proper technique while playing so you don't damage the drum.
