The hi-hat is a versatile instrument and there are multiple techniques drummers like to apply to playing this set of cymbals. To many drummers, a hi-hat lift is when you create a wide, open sound by hitting the hi-hat when it's open. To do this, you have to lift your foot off of the pedal that keeps the hi-hat clamped down for a shorter, quieter sound, and that's why working with an open hi-hat is often called lift.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Go into any drumming style you want in any rhythm. Keep your left foot against the hi-hat pedal so that the hi-hat remains closed. Start pounding away and keep time to yourself. If you have a metronome, that doesn't hurt either.

  2. Step 2

Find your beat. You'll need to be methodical about creating lifts. Count along to your drumming.

  3. Step 3

Now, release pressure with your left foot. Your hi-hat will separate or "open" with the top part rising away from the bottom. You now have an open hi-hat.

  4. Step 4

Hit the hi hat during your drum play (on beat).

  5. Step 5

Return your left foot to the pedal, with some force. There you have it: the basic lift. Use this new technique to educate and impress friends and neighbors, or as a practical measure when you are on stage.
