Things You'll Need:
- Snare drum
- Kick drum
- Drum sticks
-
Step 1
Tap either foot or count a 4/4 beat in your head. Since you will be using both feet, you may feel more comfortable counting in your head.
-
Step 2
Press the hi hat pedal down as far as it will go. The cymbal should sound short and tight when struck. If it does not, make the proper adjustments.
-
Step 3
Begin your beat by playing the one and three beats with the cymbal and kick drum only. This provides the foundation for the backbeat you will add with the snare on the other hits. This is also important if you are playing in a group, as the downbeats help the other musicians keep on time.
-
Step 4
Play the snare and the hi hat on beats two and four. This is the backbeat. As you grow as a drummer, you will find ways to incorporate more of your personality and feeling in this beat. At this point you will be hitting the hi hat on every beat then alternating between the snare and the kick drum.
-
Step 5
Experiment with the tone and speed once you have the beat down. This is the root of many beats, and you can branch off in amazing directions by forcing yourself to try new beats.
