Before you can install a brand new screen on a sliding screen door, you must remove the door handle. Once the handle is out of the way, you should be able to install the new screen. Use these suggestions to remove the sliding screen door handle without any major problems.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Screw driver
  1. Step 1

Lay your screen door frame down on the ground or a flat surface.

  2. Step 2

Remove the old screen completely if you can, or take it out of the spline everywhere except where the door handle is located.

  3. Step 3

Unscrew the screws used to hold the small plastic door handle in place. There are usually two small screws located on each side of the handle.

  4. Step 4

Pull the screen from the frame, and twist it out of the locking mechanism. Leave only the locking mechanism in its place.

Tips & Warnings
  • It's best to take the sliding screen door handle off before or while you're removing the old screen so it doesn't get in the way when you install the new one.
  • After you install a new screen, and your spline is back in place, you should re-install the door handle by snapping it back through the lock mechanism and screwing it in place.
  • You must remove the locking mechanism with the handle on some sliding screen doors. Refer to your owner's manual if the handle does not come off easily.
  • If the handle is cracked or broken, buy a replacement one. Don't put it back on the door. A broken handle can cause injuries.
