Step 1
Keep count. The Cha Cha has four counts per bar. The fourth beat gets split in two which is where the cha cha's 2, 3, 4 and 1 rhythm comes from, or, in others words, the cha cha cha beat. Basically, it goes beat, beat, cha cha cha.

Step 2
Learn to pivot. Step forward on your left foot, which is in the front. Raise both of your heels off of the dance floor and turn on your toes to face the opposite direction. Don't lift up the toes. They stay on the same spot on the floor while you turn on them. Put your weight down on the back foot (right foot) which is now the front foot and step forward on your left foot. Bring it down next to the right foot. You have just completed the first half turn.
-
Step 3
Do the small cha cha cha steps at the end of the first pivot and the beginning of the second half turn. These are very small side by side steps. It's kind of like a quick shuffle step. Keep your hips relatively still. Don't let them rise and fall, but stay at a horizontal level instead.
-
Step 4
Complete the second pivot. This time step forward with your right foot. Lift your heels up. Pivot around on your toes to face the front again. Put your weight on the left foot, which is now the front foot. Step forward on your right to bring the rear foot up next to the front. Never go all the way around in a full rotation. Instead of a full turn, it's a half turn, and another half turn coming back done in two pivots with the cha cha cha beat in between.

Step 5
Finish off the count with a second cha cha cha movement and end ready to step back into the basic cha cha footwork.
