Things You'll Need:
- Hand planer
- Shear form tool
- Shaping stall
- Power sander
-
Step 1
Lay the surfboard blank horizontally on the shaping stall. These are the surfaces you are going to pre-plane. Don't worry about cleaning up the lines of the outside edges; this is done late in the surfboard-shaping process.
-
Step 2
Stand at the end of the surfboard blank, and hold it at an angle to see the high spots. Hold the board at a slight angle, and bend your head down so you're at eye level. As you look down the board, you will quickly notice high and low areas to pre-plane.
-
Step 3
Add some weight. Putting a medium-weight piece of metal or wood keeps the board in place during the pre-planing process. Without the extra weight, the board tends to shift around as you move the hand planer or shear tool around the board.
-
Step 4
Stop and check your work. Stop planning every two or three strokes to avoid taking off too much foam.
-
Step 5
Repeat Step 1 through Step 4 on the other side of the surfboard blank.
