If you receive an invitation that says "white tie," or you just want to stand out as the groom at your wedding, you should dress in formal wear. White tie is common attire for formal evening events, such as balls, weddings and the opera. It's similar to black tie and applies to dress for both men and women.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderate

Men's Attire

Step1
Choose a black tailcoat and coordinating pants. The jacket is short and squared on the sides with two knee-length tails in back. The pants should not be cuffed and have a satin strip running down the outside of each leg.
Step2
Wear a white wing color shirt with cuff links.
Step3
Cover the shirt with a white pique vest.
Step4
Tie on a white bow tie around the collar. It should be made of quality cotton.
Step5
Put on a pair of black shoes and socks. Patent leather shoes are very popular.

Women's Dress

Step1
Select a floor-length ball gown made with fine fabric and detailed trim. Off-the-shoulder styles are very popular.
Step2
Wear formal pumps or sandals. Ballet shoes can be worn by younger girls, especially if dancing is required.
Step3
Accessorize with fine jewelry such as earrings, necklaces, bracelets and rings. Opera-length white gloves may also be worn.
Step4
Carry an evening bag that matches and complements the shoes and jewelry.
Step5
Wrap a stole made of fur or luxurious fabric around yourself to stay warm. A cape or fur coat are also acceptable.
