How to Find the Right Hat

People have been wearing hats since the beginning of recorded history. Even prior to that, someone no doubt pulled an animal skin over his head for warmth and protection. Buy a hat for a special occasion or a fashion statement. Consider how often you're going to wear the hat, and choose a new hat that's flattering while completing your look.

Instructions

1. Consider the shape of your face. Determine if your face shape is oval, round, square, triangular or oblong. Experiment with different styles to get the right look.

2. Choose a hat with angular styling and a high brim for a round face. Pick a hat that is wider than your face and stay away from floppy hats or those with a round or circular silhouette.

3. Select a wide hat with a floppy or curled brim to complement a long face. Note that a narrow brim can visually add length to a long, narrow face.

4. Wear almost any hat with an oval face. Tilt the hat to the right and left to adjust the brim. Make sure the front of the hat is sitting correctly down the forehead. Pull your hair up, and keep it hidden under the hat for a different look.

5. Visit a milliner and have a hat custom designed and fitted. Choose a classic design with minimal embellishment to get the most fashion mileage.

• Use jewelry to balance the look of the hat or add a necklace. Count eyeglasses as an accessory and consider the effect on the line and balance of the hat.

• Set an amount out of the clothing budget to spend on hats. Consider a dressier hat, high fashion, a summer straw hat, a cowboy hat or an ethnic look.
