Step 1
Get your teeth deep cleaned, a process known as scaling and root planing. Scaling is scraping tartar from the exposed part of the teeth. During root planing, the dentist cleans out pockets around the teeth with a curette and removes diseased tissue.
-
Step 2
Take aspirin or mild pain relievers if your mouth feels sore after the procedure.
-
Step 3
Use anti-bacterial mouth washes. Take antibiotics if required. Antibiotics can help reduce the need for surgery. The dentist may insert antibiotic floss or gel into infected areas.
-
Step 4
Get surgery to reduce the size of pockets if necessary. During surgery, the dentist may removed damaged tissue or reshape bone.
-
Step 5
Talk to your dentist about bone grafting if the bones holding your teeth in place are damaged. The dentist may add a filter so that tissue doesn't grow into the bone space. Proteins that stimulate bone growth may be inserted to speed up the regeneration of bone.
-
Step 6
Undergo tissue graft procedures if your gums are damaged. Tissue is taken from the palate and is sewn over the receded gums. The dentist may use proteins to encourage regeneration.
-
Step 7
See the dentist for routine maintenance after any procedure. Practice good dental hygiene at home, which includes brushing, flossing and rinsing.
