Do you think clowns are cute and funny? Do you love their red noses, puffy hair and floppy shoes? Or do the colorful characters seem mysterious and strange, inducing more fear than mirth? Many people think that clowns can be a little creepy, but for some people, the fear runs much deeper, affecting their daily lives. There are a few signals that may indicate that you or someone you love may suffer from coulrophobia (fear of clowns.)

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderate

Step1
Recognize the symptoms of coulrophobia, which can include shortness of breath, irregular heartbeat, stomach pains, nausea, sweating, dizziness and overall feelings of panic, dread or terror. People with coulrophobia will take extreme measures to avoid seeing a clown.
Step2
Understand the feelings of people that suffer from coulrophobia. To them, it is very real fear. Many psychologists believe that coulrophobia is most commonly triggered by a traumatic experience in childhood. Others believe that people are afraid of clowns because the make-up and painted-on smiles make it difficult to determine a clown's true emotions and what really lurks behind that smile.
Step3
Consider possible treatment options for coulrophobia, including hynotherapy, accupuncture or meditation or group therapy. Often, psychotherapists can help by teaching cognitive behavior techniques (changing unhealthy thought processes) or other constructive ways of dealing with fear. In severe cases, a doctor may prescribe anti-anxiety medications.
Step4
Understand the prognosis. With proper treatment, the vast majority of people with coulrophobia can completely overcome their fears and be symptom free for years, if not for life.
