Anxiety disorders are a type of mental illness that affect women more frequently than men. Agoraphobia, the fear of crowds or public places, is an anxiety disorder that can severely limit daily activities. Seek medical attention if you suspect agoraphobia is controlling your life.

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Schedule a doctor's appointment if you experience fear or anxiety, tightness in your chest, shortness of breath, dizziness, extreme tiredness, shaking or a combination of these symptoms. You may be experiencing a panic attack, a symptom of agoraphobia or other anxiety-based disorders. Tell your doctor about your symptoms and get a physical to check for any disease or medical disorder.

  2. Step 2

Suspect agoraphobia if you avoid places due to a fear of being trapped, suffering a panic attack or other catastrophe. Pay attention to the places you go and the people you go with. If your social group has narrowed down to only individuals you feel "safe" with or those who you feel can stop panic attacks, suspect you may be suffering from agoraphobia. Begin to keep a diary of places you go, people you are with and the reasons you avoid certain activities.

  3. Step 3

Read about anxiety disorders in general and agoraphobia specifically. Find medical information on the Agoraphobia Resource Center website (see Resources below) and other online mental heath resources.

  4. Step 4

Contact your family doctor and ask for a referral to a mental health professional if you develop a fear of being alone and an obsession with physical ailments. Make an appointment and take your diary with you. Discuss your symptoms with a mental health professional for a diagnosis of your condition.
