Calligraphy is the art of writing. It is more like drawing than simply writing down letters and words. Each stroke of the pen is important and the shape of the letters is paid close attention to. Anyone that can write can learn calligraphy but it is a skill that is learned mostly through practice.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  1. Step 1

Gather your materials. The main thing that you need is pen and paper. If you want, you can use a special calligraphy pen but for beginners a normal pen works fine until you know how to make the pen strokes. If you want something that will give you the feel of a calligraphy pen, find a marker or Sharpie to practice with.

  2. Step 2

Find a sample to follow. A sample is just a model of the upper and lower case letters in calligraphy for you to follow. There are many styles of calligraphy to follow so there will be many to choose from. You can either find a book on calligraphy to follow or samples of calligraphy writing. This will give you model to follow.

  3. Step 3

Practice each stroke of the lines that form the letters. Unlike normal writing that uses connected motions to form the letters, calligraphy uses single strokes of the pen to form the letters.

  4. Step 4

Practice the letters over and over again until you can draw them perfectly. Remember to practice both the upper and lower case letters. The goal is to get the letters to be as perfectly formed as possible.

  5. Step 5

Start writing in calligraphy. Once you have the letters practiced perfectly, you can begin writing words and phrases using calligraphy letters.
