Peppermint oil is most well known for its fabulously refreshing flavor, used in gums, candies and toothpastes; however, peppermint oil has a number of healing qualities as well. Peppermint has a calming and soothing effect on the body, and is often used to treat depression, anxiety, stress, nervous conditions and headaches.

        Take a break for some peppermint tea. While the healing effects of tea are most commonly used to treat internal conditions, simply breathing the healing aroma as you enjoy a hot cup of tea can help to relieve a headache. Steep your tea bag in boiling water for 10 or 15 minutes, keeping your mug covered, and then sweeten as desired and enjoy.

        Create your own healing peppermint massage oil which can be applied topically to help relieve a headache. Mix equal parts of peppermint essential oil and extra-virgin, cold pressed olive oil and gently massage into your temples, jaws and the back of your neck. Do not wipe off the oil when finished, rather allow it to absorb fully into your skin.

        Use a peppermint steam treatment, particularly if your headache is caused by sinus pressure. Boil a small pot of water and remove from heat, adding 10 drops of peppermint essential oil. Drape your head with a towel and lean over the steaming water, inhaling deeply for 10 minutes.

        Relax in a warm peppermint bath to help reduce muscle tension as you inhale the healing peppermint vapors and relieve a headache. Simple add 10 to 15 drops off peppermint essential oil to a warm bath and soak.

    • Remember that peppermint oil, often used for cooking, and peppermint essential oil are two very different products. Always purchase essential oils for healing and store them in a cool, dark place.

    • Peppermint oil should not be taken internally if you have hiatal hernia, acid reflux disease, gallbladder problems or are pregnant or nursing.
