How to Use Eucalyptus for Sinus Infection

Because sinus infections are almost always caused by a bacterial infection, the most common traditional treatment is with a round of antibiotics. However, once you have suffered one sinus infection, your risk for getting another rise greatly. For those who prefer to limit there intake of antibiotics, herbal anti-biotic remedies, such as eucalyptus, are a great alternative.

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Fresh or dried eucalyptus leaves
  • Eucalyptus essential oil
  • Olive oil
  • Eucalyptus cough drops
  1. Step 1

    Make a eucalyptus mouthwash which will help to eliminate bacteria which cause a sinus infection. Mix 1 part eucalyptus essential oil with 10 parts water and gargle two to three times daily, or at least 30 seconds.

  2. Step 2

    Drink eucalyptus tea, helping to introduce the antibacterial properties of the leaves into your body to help combat a sinus infection. Break one dried or fresh leaf into small pieces and cover with 1 cup of boiling water. Allow the tea to steep covered for 10 minutes and then sweeten with honey if you like. Drink 4 to 5 cups each day.

  3. Step 3

    Relieve the symptoms of a sinus infection, such as congestion and sinus pressure, by mixing 10 drops of eucalyptus essential oil with 2 cups of olive oil. Massage the oil mixture into your chest whenever needed. This is a particularly helpful remedy to help you sleep comfortably.

  4. Step 4

    Introduce the healing eucalyptus vapors directly into your nasal passages by using a steam treatment. Boil a small pot of water and then add 5 to 10 drops of eucalyptus essential oil to the water. Place your head over the steaming water, covering your head with a towel, and breathe as deeply as possible for 10 to 15 minutes. Repeat whenever needed to relieve pain and congestion.

  5. Step 5

    Purchase some eucalyptus cough drops for sweet relief. The cough drops will not only help to keep bacteria at bay, the vapors will help to reduce inflammation and congestion throughout the day.

Tips & Warnings
  • It is not recommended that children under 6, people with liver, kidney or gastrointestinal conditions, those with high blood pressure or women who are pregnant or nursing use products containing eucalyptus.
