How to Use Eucalyptus for Bronchitis

Bronchitis, or the inflammation of the air passages in the lungs, is often caused by a viral or bacterial infection beginning in the nose and throat and traveling to the lungs. Eucalyptus is a fantastic natural remedy for bronchitis, as it is an expectorant with anti-inflammatory, anti-viral and anti-bacterial properties.

Things You'll Need:

  • Eucalyptus essential oil
  • Olive oil
  • Eucalyptus tincture
  1. Step 1

    Soothe your symptoms with a hot cup of eucalyptus tea four or five times daily. Simply break a dried or fresh eucalyptus leaf into small pieces and cover with one cup of boiling water. Allow to steep for 10 minutes and then sweeten with honey if desired. Sip slowly while hot, inhaling the vapors as you drink.

  2. Step 2

    Get a good night's sleep, helping to soothe a cough, reduce inflammation and clear breathing. Mix 10 drops of eucalyptus essential oil with 2 cups of olive oil and massage the mixture into your chest whenever needed for relieve from symptoms.

  3. Step 3

    Use eucalyptus tincture twice a day, mixing 20 drops with a glass of warm water. However, it is important to remember that high doses of eucalyptus taken internally can be toxic, therefore, choose between the tincture or hot eucalyptus tea, but do not use both in the same day. Never add essential oils to boiling water, as heat can destroy the healing properties.

  4. Step 4

    Get quick relieve with a eucalyptus steam treatment, repeating several times a day as needed. Boil a small pot of water and remove from heat, adding 10 to 15 drops of eucalyptus essential oil. Place your head over the steaming water, covering your head with a towel, and inhale as deeply as possible for 10 to 15 minutes.

Tips & Warnings
  • Eucalyptus products should not be used by people with asthma, kidney or liver disorders, gastrointestinal upset, high blood pressure or while pregnant or nursing. Additionally, it is not recommended that children under 6 years old use eucalyptus.
