How to Use Tea Tree Oil for Infection

Tea tree oil is an extract from leaves of a tree native to Australia. The powerful oil is a natural antiseptic with anti-fungal and anti-viral properties, meaning with proper use it can effectively help to both treat and prevent infection. A few tips can help.

Things You'll Need

  • Tea tree oil
  • Cotton swabs
  • Aloe vera gel
  • Use tea tree oil mouthwash to help treat infected teeth and comes, throat infections or thrush, a fungal infection which causes small white spots to form on the mouth, tonsils and throat. Mix 3 or 4 drops of oil with every 2 Tbsp. of water and gargle for 30 seconds, two or three times daily.

  • Create a natural disinfectant which can be used to clean your kitchen, bathroom or even to wipe off a telephone to help prevent the spread of infection. Mix 1 part tea tree oil with 5 parts water, soak a cloth in the solution and wipe down surfaces. Allow the solution to air dry.

  • Prevent infection of acne, splinters, ingrown hairs and other skin ailments when no broken skin is present. Apply pure tea tree oil to a cotton swab and use the oil to clean the area two or three times daily. If you experience skin irritation, the oil can be mixed up to a 50/50 solution in either water or aloe vera gel.

  • Dilute tea tree oil a bit more for treating and preventing infection on open wounds. Once again, clean the area two or three times daily; however, for broken skin, dilute 1 part tea tree oil with 9 parts water or aloe vera gel.

  • Soothe larger skin infections, such as eczema or candida skin infection by adding 5 to 10 drops of tea tree oil to a warm bath and soaking for 10 or 15 minutes, two or three times weekly.

  • Get rid of fungal nail infections the natural way by applying pure tea tree oil to the nail and nail bed two or three times each day. Additionally, you can soak the nail once a day in a 50/50 solution of oil and water.
