When you are looking for a creative way to welcome arriving guests or send memorable birthday presents to folks on the mainland, Hawaiian gift baskets are a thoughtful way to share your Aloha spirit.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Basket
  • Filler
  • Coffee mugs
  • Kona coffee
  • Fresh or dried tropical fruit
  • Jams or jellies
  • Macadamia nuts
  • Fresh or artificial Hawaiian plants or flowers
  • Candies
  • Cookies
  • Small Hawaiian souvenirs
  • Double-sided tape
  • Cellophane bag or sheet of cellophane
  • Bow
  • Card
  1. Step 1

Buy the materials. Bamboo or woven lauhala baskets, cellophane, filler and popular Hawaiian products can be purchased at craft stores or online at websites such as Ben Franklin or Hilo Hattie (see Resources below). If you are sending the basket to non-Hawaiian residents, select items that your recipient might not be able to find at home such, as Kona coffee, tropical fruit, Hawaiian plants or flowers or small Hawaiian icons.

  2. Step 2

Arrange the items by size before assembling. Place all the products on a table to get an idea of an attractive placement. Place larger items toward the back, medium size in the middle and smaller ones distributed throughout.

  3. Step 3

Assemble the gift basket. Fill with raffia or shred, and place the items in the basket. After making final adjustments, secure items to the filler with double-sided tape. Make sure it looks as full as possible, and that all the labels face outward. Fill empty spaces with small, miscellaneous items.

  4. Step 4

Wrap it. Carefully lower the basket into the bag, or place onto a measured sheet of cellophane. Pleat and gather the cellophane evenly above the basket, and tie a bow at the top.

Tips & Warnings
  • Make sure you measure carefully so that the basket and wrap are large enough to fit the contents.
  • If not delivering locally or inter-island, stick with non-perishable items.
  • Limit the use of chocolate and other items which melt or spoil easily in hot climates.
  • Do not place candles, potpourri or other scented spa items into the same basket that contains any type of food.
  • Check for restrictions on shipping plants or fruit.
