1. Choose patterns and materials that fit your personality. If you're tastes are conservative, go with solids or understated, simple patterns like pinstripes. If you're a bit bolder, buy bright colors and splashy patterns.

2. Layer the smock dress over pants. If you have found a smock dress you must have but it is either too short to wear alone or you don't feel confident exposing your legs, put on a pair of pants or leggings under it.

3. Pick the right footwear. To even out the volume of the dress, choose a chunky heel. Alternatively, add casualness to the outfit by pairing it with flats. If wearing the dress over pants or jeans, then high heels should be worn.

4. Accessorize the look. Wear chunky jewelry and belts to balance out the volume of the dress. Don't go overboard though; one or two accessories are enough.
